This study concerns the matter of underground architecture and the deeper meaning of the term “underground”. It begins with analyzing man’s connection with the land, the eternal worship of “Mother Earth”, the reason behind our subconscious reactions upon even hearing the term “underground”.

Several historical examples of underground architecture are presented, including the realization of the underground city until nowadays. The most common uses, along with their pros and cons are elaborately explained. Short references to the Underground and Land arts add to the spherical understanding of the meaning.

In conclusion, a few select examples of contemporary architecture are showcased, in order to summarize the vast potential of the holistic thinking of subterranean architecture.
